Mobile Air Sampling & Testing

ENERGEN contracted Bell Laboratories to air sampling on untreated fuel at 80% and 100% loads and then after a 50 hour run of treated fuel to repeat the same air analysis. We are thankful to DH Tech for the provision of heating elements, blowers and the use of their site for this test.

Our Evaluation

ENERGEN, is promoted for its potential to improve fuel efficiency and significantly reduce emissions in particular diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recognizing the importance of validating these claims for large-scale industrial applications, Fuel Plus International P/L engaged BELL Laboratories to conduct rigorous emission testing on a diesel generator. The testing protocol involved initially measuring emissions using untreated diesel (Mobil retail offering) at two load settings: full load and 80% load, the latter aligning with typical industrial generator operation (advised by Macfarlane Generators to be within 65-90%). After a 50-hour operational period with the same generator and diesel batch, the emissions were re-measured using diesel treated with Energen, enabling a direct comparison of emissions and fuel consumption under realistic working conditions.
The analytical testing employed standard, accredited methods to ensure data accuracy and reliability. Combustion gases—carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulphur dioxide—were measured in real time using a portable MRU combustion analyser following EPA-approved protocols;
  • US-EPA 3A,
  • US-EPA 10,
  • US-EPA 7E,
  • US-EPA 6C &
  • NIOSH 5040
Diesel particulate matter, primarily elemental carbon, was collected onto quartz filters for detailed laboratory analysis performed by Coal Services (Wollongong). All sampling and laboratory analyses were conducted by BELL Laboratories or certified third-party laboratories, adhering to ISO 17025 standards for testing competence.
The results demonstrated notable reductions in key emission parameters when using ENERGEN -treated diesel: carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides decreased at both load levels, particulate matter emissions dropped by approximately 30% at full load and 50% at 80% load, and sulphur dioxide levels decreased at full load but slightly increased at 80% load. Additionally, fuel consumption data indicated an overall reduction of approximately 30%, highlighting Energen’s potential for operational cost savings alongside environmental benefits.
Bell Laboratories commissioned Coal Services to do the DPM (Diesel Particulate Matter Test – Elemental Carbon). Follow this link for the Coal Services report. https://energen.co/coal-services/
